News Thumb 07.Jul.2025

The shortage of manpower in various Indian-related sectors including food, beverages, manufacturing, and restaurants is worsening day by day, said Datuk J. Govindaswamy @ Suresh, president of the Malaysian Indian Restaurant Owners Association (PRIMAS).

He pointed out a few days ago that due to manpower shortage, many people across the country have already.

- Industry members are concerned that the manpower shortage is worsening day by day.
- Pressure increases on restaurants as labour shortage persists.
- Forced to employ illegal foreign workers with no other option.

The association had already pointed out that restaurants and food shops have been closed. In this situation, many restaurants have faced a precarious situation with the shortage of manpower increasing day by day.

Datuk J. Govindaswamy has also pointed out to the government that if the manpower shortage continues like this, there will come a time when it will be impossible to run restaurants. 2026 is the year of arrival in Malaysia. Therefore, PRIMAS has repeatedly requested that the government consider this and find a proper solution to the manpower shortage in various industries including restaurants.

He also stressed that the government should take the restaurant industry seriously, as it faces immense pressure if the manpower shortage persists. He made these demands at a press conference in the capital Kuala Lumpur a few days ago.

Will the condition relax?

PRIMAS also urged the government to reintroduce procedures for bringing migrant workers into the country to address the manpower shortage. The association is demanding that the government at least relax the conditions.

Restaurants, including other industries, have no choice but to bring in essential workers to continue operating during these difficult times, as all efforts to attract local workers to work in restaurants have not met the expected success.
